Paper Airplanes, Sister Smoke, and a Wedding Under Watch
Friday in Fairmont Crest said “no rest for the wicked,” and honestly? Nobody else got any rest either. Episode #391 of Beyond the Gates (CBS, weekdays at 2 p.m. ET) gave us a new neighbor nobody asked for, a half-million-dollar handshake, a paper airplane squadron, and an engagement that set the family group chat on fire.
Underneath the chaos, though, this episode was quietly about the women of the Crest protecting what’s theirs: their love, their joy, their celebrations, and their boundaries. Let’s get into it.
Dani Is Thriving. Andre? Not So Much.
Picture it: Dani and Andre (Karla Mosley, Sean Freeman), kissing at Uptown, living their best married life. Then Heather Armstrong (Ashley Jones) walks up and announces she’s bought a condo right next to her brother Joey’s (Jon Lindstrom) place. Dani, gracious as ever, invites her to join them. Andre unravels in real time: “Why would you move here?”
Heather’s phone pings with her accepted offer, and she sends him off with a breezy “Bye, neighbor.” Chills.
Meanwhile, Dani is out here doing everything right. She’s warm, she’s open, and she’s literally profiting off her own marriage, collecting $10,000 from Joey on a bet that she and Andre would last a year. Then she grinned her way into double-or-nothing for year two. Betting on your own love story? That’s confidence, sis.
The Secret That’s Costing Her
Andre’s problem is that he knows exactly who Heather is: “The Impaler,” the dangerous figure who owns Uptown and has deep criminal ties. He calls his London contact Henry, fishing for extradition or a way to get rid of her. Henry shuts it down, warning that Heather would “cut your throat before your morning coffee, and your wife’s too.” Then he tells Andre he’s on his own.
So when Dani, celebrating the anniversary of moving in together, suggests inviting Heather over, Andre explodes. He insists she doesn’t understand. And she doesn’t, because he won’t tell her.
Let’s be clear: protecting your wife and keeping her in the dark are not the same thing. Dani clocked the intensity immediately, and she deserves a partner who trusts her with the truth, especially with her lingering ties to Bill already testing the marriage. A secret this big doesn’t shield her. It isolates her.
Heather’s Tears Hit Different (Because They’re Fake)
Heather’s strategy is two-pronged: plant roots near Andre, then work Joey’s heart. She tells Vanessa McBride (Lauren Bugoli) it “would disappoint” her if Vanessa tried to discourage her visits, a velvet-gloved threat if we’ve ever heard one. Vanessa holds firm that Joey’s happiness is her priority.
Then Heather visits Joey, promises to stop pushing their partnership, and turns on the waterworks. Joey softens and holds her hand. Out on the porch, Heather dries her eyes like she’s clocking out of a shift. Joey already admitted she’s been reminding him of their father lately. Listen to yourself, Joey.
Hayley’s Shopping for a Brand-New Past
In her hotel room, Hayley Lawson (Marquita Goings) faces her furious cousin Randy, who’s angry she threw him under the bus with Vernon (Clifton Davis). Her fix? A new identity, a classier one this time, since the last one ended violently. They shake on half a million dollars. Reinvention is on brand for Hayley, but running isn’t the same as healing.
Naomi and Bill: A Soft Life Moment
The episode’s sweetest beat belonged to Naomi Hamilton Hawthorne (Arielle Prepetit), who surprised her dad at his office for his birthday. Her gift was a paper-airplane maker, a nod to the planes they folded together when she was little. They launched a whole squadron, laughing like old times.
Bill joked about Chelsea setting up his dating profile (surviving poisoning only to get matched by an algorithm is wild) and admitted he should’ve heeded warnings about Hayley sooner. He also tried, again, to recruit Naomi to work for him. She declined. Loving your father and protecting your career boundaries can both be true. Add how she and Jacob are keeping their clashing roles in Smitty’s case out of their marriage, and Naomi is giving masterclass.
Shanice Deserves Her Happily Ever After
Ted and Shanice (Keith D. Robinson, Ernestine Johnson Morrison) are engaged, and Eva Thomas (Ambyr Michelle) came in glowing with congratulations. But Kat Richardson (Colby Muhammad) had already broken the news to Leslie Thomas (Trisha Mann-Grant) at Uptown. Eva, who’d planned to approach Leslie with compassion, confronted Kat, and things got heated. Kat didn’t budge, refusing to let Leslie ruin another celebration.
You can debate Kat’s delivery, but her instinct to protect a moment of joy? We get it. Black women have had plenty of happy occasions hijacked, and guarding them isn’t pettiness. It’s preservation.
Later, Leslie showed up with a bouquet, swearing Marcel Malone (Darryl W. Handy) has her heart. Ted and Shanice stayed skeptical. And after Ted’s slip comparing wedding plans to his first marriage stung for a moment, let’s say it plainly: Shanice deserves to be the main character of her own engagement.
The Bottom Line
Episode #391 made one thing clear: secrets are closing in on Fairmont Crest. But between Dani’s bold bets on love, Naomi’s boundary-setting, and Shanice’s hard-won joy, the women of Beyond the Gates keep reminding us that peace isn’t passive. You have to protect it.
